Arirang,
over the Hill

Korean folk song 'Arirang' encompasses the understanding of life, its curved pathway, the highlights and shadows, love and regret. This concept of life is expressed both in the rising and falling of notes, but also in the song's lyrics where the protagonist walks over the hilled path named Arirang.

The pavilion brings the aural and spiritual contents of the song into a physical form. Timber pannels are crossed, forming a gentle slope where square paths are laid. Each step over the hill press into a bell mechanism placed under the top panel and play the melody of Arirang. Thourgh this, the physical experience of walking over a hill is integrated with aural sensation of historic melody, allowing a more holistic understanding of this intangeble heritage.
